
Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs
The Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs (MNCC) is the traditional government of the Mohawk people. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy recognizes and sanctions the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs as the official government of the Mohawk or Kahniakehake (People of the Flint). The fire or capital of the Mohawk Nation rests at Ahkwesahsne (also known as the St. Regis Indian Reservation).
Mohawk territory encompassing a large portion of present day, Upstate New York from the Mohawk Valley, to southern portions of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, Canada to Vermont and into Massachusetts. Ahkwesahsne is one of eight Mohawk communities. The eight communities include the following:
